@staff I am going to log off now to protest that NSFW ban Tumblr plans to implement starting tomorrow. Here is why:
A. Fandom Culture is a safe space
for Queer People and women to explore their fantasies and carve out a
space for themselves. Here, their sexuality is valid, seen and
represented. The way fandoms transform movies or TV shows (which, let’s
be honest here, are often the product of a straight, white, cismale
point of view) into empowering narratives for minorities. In this way marginalized groups can
project themselves onto the plot and effectively become heroes.
Queer, female love and sexuality are hereby not a taboo but pure,
righteous and most importantly, existent. And yes, there are some forms
of queer/female fanart depicting darker themes such as rape, misogyny,
homophobia, transphobia, kinks etc. but even they are produced -mostly
at least- according to the terms and conditions set by those groups and
are not broadly considered harmful. (CP nonwithstanding of course)
B. Secondly, moving away from the fandom aspect: Pornography is by its
very nature political. It depicts through its socio-economic functions
what is seen as normal and desireable. Seeing Gay sex, seeing
transpeople and seeing women assert themselves physically and without
shame can be a very powerful, political statement. It essentially
resists the cishetero, male dominated worldview. Of course, discussions
about exploitation must and should be had. Not all porn is created equal.
C. It targets
marginalized groups who earn their money through sex work. Women,
transpeople and gay people do sell pictures or videos through tumblr and are able to finance themselves and their
transition because of it. This is a very important functio tumblr is
rejecting now. Being self-employed is stressful, but it enables people to set boundaries for themselves and doesn’t force them to give
up agency when sex work is often the only work some of these groups are
able to do. (Because of transphobia and homophobia or racism on the job market,
for example)
If tumblr want to ban p*rnbots and CP (as they should!!) there are other ways to enforce this. Otherwise, they are harming their own fanbase by making hasty decisions.
